Biography

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gülşah YILDIRIM completed her medical education at İstanbul University, İstanbul Faculty of Medicine between 2006–2012 and earned the title of Medical Doctor.

From 2012–2017, she entered the radiology specialty at İstanbul University Faculty of Medicine with a high ranking in the specialization exam. During her specialty, her work focused heavily on Interventional Radiology.

  • 2017-2019: Fulfilled her mandatory state service at Ardahan State Hospital.

  • 2019-2022: Served as an Interventional Radiology specialist at İstanbul University of Health Sciences, Fatih Sultan Mehmet Training & Research Hospital, engaging in high-scale stroke center activities.

  • 2020-2021: Worked as a faculty member at Haliç University.

  • 2022-2024: Continuously served as Doçent Doktor at İstanbul Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi; founded the stroke center there; acted as chief of the Interventional Radiology Department. Her work focused especially on neuro-interventions and interventional oncology.

In 2019, she received training in Madrid under Dr. Eduardo Crespo Vallejo (Jefe de sección de Radiologia Vascular e Intervencionista) in minimal invasive treatments for thyroid nodules. She pioneered the use of uncooled microwave ablation system for percutaneous tumor treatments in Turkey.

She has performed hundreds of thyroid nodule treatments using the uncooled microwave ablation technique and has contributed several articles to international literature. In 2022 she developed an artery-first microwave ablation technique, now accepted internationally as a novel approach in treating thyroid nodules. She also has extensive experience with cooled microwave systems, radiofrequency ablation, and embolization methods for thyroid nodule treatment.

Since 2022, she has been part of international meetings that guide guidelines (such as CIRSE, PAIRS, MITT) within the thyroid working groups, organizing many workshops both domestically and internationally. She also organizes national thyroid workshops with the Interventional Radiology Association in Türkiye.
